Who would believe that a Japanese garden could be
water effiient?

To turn any style garden into a xeriscape garden, you
have to remember 3 things: divide your garden into
'zones' that will receive different amounts of water,
put the proper plants in each zone and then water
each zone efficiently.

This side yard joins two neighbors who both wanted a
lovely view from their decks. We chose a Japanese
motif and then used a wonderful selection of xeric
plants.

The upper section is quite steep and sunny so we used the most
drought-tolerant plants in that area to simplify the watering problems.
The lower section is flat and shady. This was the
perfect spot for a small pool and waterfall. Here we
chose plants that needed a bit more water to encircle
the pond.

And of course, rocks are always a central theme in a
Japanese garden and don't need any water.
The final touches: a bridge over the dry streambed and a Japanese candle
lantern for a spot of light in the evenings..
