Water Features for Xeriscape Landscapes
Not everyone is lucky enough to have water running through their
property, but if you do, be sure and make the best of it. By installing a sitting area on one side of this stream and a pond (not shown) on the other side, these homeowners can enjoy the sight and sound of water from everywhere in their yard. |
If you aren't interested in keeping fish, consider a small, recycling pond
that is drained in the winter. This pond is only about 3' x 4' but with a tumbling waterfall, pond plants, grasses to soften the pond edges and some simple garden ornaments, you can add a great focal point to your landscape. |
Water features have a place in drought-tolerant landscapes. They fit into the natural environment, attract all kinds of wildlife, help cover up road (and
neighbor) noise and provide the perfect spot for relaxing after a hard day's work. By surrounding your pond with drought-tolerant plants watered with an efficient drip system, your water use will still be much lower than an equivalent amount of water-thirsty grass. And watching a waterfall spill over the rocks is a whole lot more fun than watching grass grow! |
This homeowner is making the most of her 12'x16' pond and waterfall.
She is raising goldfish, overwintering them in the deepest part of the pond, growing gorgeous pond plants and providing a home for a pair of ducks that show up occasionally looking for a resting spot. |
